Updating your thermostat can help you manage the amount of energy you use and help make your home more comfortable. Here is a quick buyers guide to help you find the perfect thermostat for your home.
1. Programmable
A programmable thermostat allows the user to program the temperature that they want for a specified amount of time. You could set the thermostat to 74 degrees for the time you will be home and raise it to 78 degrees while you are at work. There are a few variations of programmable thermostats:
- 5-1-1
This type of programmable thermostat allows you to have different settings for weekdays, Saturday, and Sunday. It also allows up to four thermostat changes during each setting.
- 5-2
This option allows for a setting for weekdays and another for weekends with four time periods in each setting.
- 7-Day
7-Day thermostats allow for the most versatile programming, up to 4 programmed periods that can be different for each day of the week.
- 1-Week
This option has the same setting, with up to four periods, for a whole week.
2. Learning
A learning thermostat isn’t pre-programmed, but rather programs itself based off of what you typically set the temperature to and when.
3. Remote Energy Management
This is a Wi-Fi option that allows you to monitor and control your thermostat from your smartphone or tablet. It may also be referred to as a “Smart” thermostat.
4. Manual
This traditional option is great for those who are home often, like a set temperature, and don’t mind manually adjusting the thermostat.
5. Digital Non-programmable
This is the same as a manual thermostat but with a digital LCD screen that displays the temperature.
Whichever option ends up working best for you, make sure that it is compatible with the type of heating and cooling unit that you have (ex: gas or electric).
